everythingamazingandsuch asked: How vital do you think the copy editor is? I was copy editor for my staff this year, which happened to be my first year, and I was just wondering how vital you thought it was.
It’s not so much how vital is the position, but how vital is the person. I’m sure you could have a copy editor, but if they didn’t do their job, then how important are they?
My copy editor is amazing. He wrote all of the divider copy and opening copy (thank the lord) and he reads every page multiple times. Sometimes on the weekends he’ll call me and say things like, “Make 8th period re-write the captions on Girl’s Lacrosse,” or, “Make sure 8th period doesn’t just copy and paste in new copy. I re-wrote everything.” So, having someone who just edits the copy for fun and takes initiative when it comes to the writing on spreads will leave you with a much better book and the thought that a copy editor is worth having aboard.
